Urgent!!!! The compression cannot be performed because the file or directory contains characters.....

I have several W2K3 servers - on one of them I have a problem when I try to zip a folder that contains files with special characters.
I get the following message:
"The compression cannot be performed because the file or directory contains characters in its name that compressed (zipped) folders cannot store"

The strange thing is, that I haven't made any special setup on the problematic server.
I checked Regional and Laguage Settings - but thewy where the same as on the other servers.

Any ideas - Quick PLEASE!!!!!!

ASKER

No - I made a simple test.
A folder with folder name 'æøå' containing a .txt document called 'test.txt'
Where are the files in relation to the root of the drive. This may also happen when the full path of the file is over 254 characters. Eg c:\folder.....\g\g\filename.cmk must be less then 254 chars.

no - the error message points out the problematic characters - in example 'ø'
Which zippint program are you using? Try the latest Winzip or Winrar.

I'm using the build in zipping function in windows - right click - sendt to - compressed folder.

I know I can use winzip or winrar, but since this is working on all my other servers, it should be possible on this server too.
What is the name of your invalid folder/file? If there is a decoding problem Windows may not be able to read the directory name hence not performing the zip?

I solved the problem by choosing "Danish" in "language for non-unicode programs" in Control panel - Regional and Language options.
