Workgroup is not accessible.
I am trying to add a laptop to a simple peer to peer network - all machines are Win XP Pro expect one, Win XP Home. This laptop is used at my other work location, on the same type of network setup, with no problem. I want to be able to move from one location to the other and use the network. Both stores have the same workgroup name but I am not able to get the other computers at location 2 to see the laptop, or it to see them. When I am at location 2 and click on My Network Places, I still see the local network items from location 1 on the laptop. When I choose View Workgroup I get the message "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin... I have been thru the threads on your sight refering to this message and have not had success. I can ping the other computers IF I have turned off the Norton Internet Security on them. If I have not, I cannot. I have two computers I have physically removed NIS from as I try to resolve this. ANy thoughts? I dont want to mess up my other location network gettting this to work. There are six permenant computers at this location and all are networked and working fine - just cant get the laptop to show up...help

I dont think you addressed my question - the 6 computers currently on the network have no issues - all can see each other and share what should be shared, map drives, ect...Only one of those 6 computers uses a password becuse it is accessed via remote desktop, the others do not but have no problems working together as I mentioned. The laptop i am trying to add works fine at the other store, I cant get it on the network here - i dont see what will help with the file sharing article you reference...

I can ping the ip of other machines if NIS is turned off, I can map to a network drive thru DOS and it then shows in Windows and I can explore it,
In the article, you will find a part where a user account must be created in every machine... Maybe is this your problem.

I'm at a loss for what setting on this machine is keeping it from joining the network like all the others that are working - any ideas?

I've read the article you refer to but we are using simple file sharing which does not require the user accounts you refer to... I am able to type the name of the computer I want to connect to \\computername and see any shared folders/printers so I can actually access what I need, but not thru the normal windows methods. I can map to the drives and access what is needed that way, but cannot use My network places or view workgroup computers. If anyone has other ideas to resolve issue, I would appreciate them.
If Notron Intenet security is installed then configure the norton personel firewall wizard ..and give the trusted IP range as per your network configuration like 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 ......
and properly check the workgroup configuration (run the wizard for samll office networs) and uncheck the simple file sahring from windows explorer>tools>folder options >
If not solved then uninstall the NIS and then check.

thanks kakadi e - I know the NIS firewall is not the issue becuase I removed it from the laptop and one of the location machines to see if the problem was resolved and it was not. I had already configured NIS to accept all the ip addresses of our network machines. When i reinstalled NIS, things still work as described above.
Sage - I will look at your info as soon as I can - what you're saying makes sense to me - I'll let you know! Thanks

Fatal Exception - the articles you have written are very well done and extremely helpful. Thank you so much. We're now good to go at this location with the laptop on the network as it should be and I have my fingers crossed things are still in sink at the other location as well. Thanks so much for your help. It's greatly appreciated.
My pleasure, bc... and thank you..

Please read this great tutorial to understund sharing:

In short: you must have user accounts on all computer in the workgroup, with same passwords... If you access from computer1 with account user1 to the computer2, you must have user1 account on computer 2, etc... Workgroup works in that way.
Adio!
