install WinXPpro on Pentium III computer
How do you install WINxppro on a Pentuim III computer that boots up on a hard disk or a floppy drive. The computer has a DVD drive but Bios does not allow you to update to allow the DVD to boot up. What to do?
That is strange, must be a very early PIII. When you checked the BIOS did it allo you to scroll through the options for boot sequence. What motherboard do you have?
Why do you say "Bios does not allow you to update"
This could mean that you can't boot from dvd drive due to BIOS, so you have 2 options:
1. make boot floppies for the operating system you need to install
2. try flash your BIOS with the latest

I agree with Spark, you shouldnt find any P3 boards without the option to boot from CD/DVD.. it might not be listed as DVD-ROM in the boot sequence though, might just be CD-ROM
you can also hook the disk to a working PC, copy the xp setup CD to a folder, and start the setup from there, using the boot floppy (a win98 boot floppy will do, if the disk is formatted FAT32)
But i agree, you should be able to boot from CD - did you try a cd drive?

The only information I can find on the computer or MB is that it is an IBM Pentium III computer desktop. The Motherboard was built in 1999.
does it still run? win98 or other OS ?
There should be a sticker on the back with a machine number and part number if its an IBM.
If it's a original IBM computer then it might be very well possible to have lost cmos information, so find the key to enter its BIOS, maybe F1 or DEL and set the BIOS Sequence to boot from CDROM as the first device.
Test your instalation DVD on another working computer that it is bootable, and success!

You might need to change the dvd unit on primary ide port as a master device if it is not.

Yes it runs under XP pro but there are so many changes and files either missing or modified that the operating system is not stable anymore. I just want to install a fresh copy of XP pro which I have the CD for on that system.

It's possible that a floppy disk left in the floppy disk unit not allow another device to boot from.
