Hello Experts:

I am trying to send an email to a customer in Africa.  When I send the email, I get a bounce back as follows:
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
customer@operation1.co.za on 6/6/2007 10:04 AM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.  Please contact your system administrator.
            <mydomain.com #5.5.0 smtp;550 Unroutable address>

How do I fix this problem?
Thanks

Hello Red:
While looking at my DNS records it shows that my FQDN is commserver.mycompany.local.  I followed the instructions but still get the bounce from the customer.  I do not see mail.mycompany.com in my dns records.  Any help is appreciated.

Your FQDN should not be anything.local - that is never going to work.

You will either need to give us your domain name, or figure part of it out for yourself.

If it is not mail.yourdomain.com, then what is the server called?  That is what goes in the FQDN

Red.

My exchange server is called commserver and my domain name is titancontracting.com

OK, excellent,

Then your FQDN, in the above guide, will be commserver.titancontracting.com

However, I can also see that you have a barracuda device installed.

This is answering as barracuda.yourdomain.com - which does not exist.  So follow the above guide to fix exchange, then you need to add a new record to DNS - call it barracuda.titancontracting.com - make it an A record - and point it to the same IP address as commserver.

Then, you should be all good!

Where did you put barracuda.titancontracting.com?  Into Exchange?

Yes, I followed the instructions in the link above.

Right, well you need to change that again, I think I confused you with the barracuda stuff.

Follow the instructions in the link, and change your FQDN to commserver.yourdomain.com

That is it, Exchange is taken care of.

Now, next problem - create a DNS entry with whoever hosts your DNS pointing barracuda.yourdomain.com to your IP address.  This is an optional step, but something that should be done anyway.

Hello Red:

Did as instructed an still get the following:

willie.n@operation.co.za on 6/6/2007 5:19 PM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.  Please contact your system administrator.
            <commserver.titancontracting.com #5.5.0 smtp;550 Unroutable address>

Do you think my ISP will need to make a DNS entry for me on their server?
CERTIFIED EXPERT

Commented:
Yeah, I would now talk to your ISP and get them to make that change - it looks like the recipient could be doing a reverse lookup

Hello Red:
I went to www.dnsreport.com and ran email report and got the following--could it be there is a problem on his end?

Getting MX record for operation.co.za (from local DNS server, may be cached)... Note: A CNAME appeared in the results.  Although technically valid for a CNAME to appear during an MX record lookup,it is very unusual and not recommended (since CNAMEs are not allowed in two other cases during MX record lookups).Got it!

Yup, congratulations, you just solved your own question :)

Sorry, I should have tested that first.

Still, be sure to setup that DNS record - if you put your own domain in there, you will see there is an error about that down the bottom.
