Backup Exec System State, and Backing up of a DC

Another Symantec Backup Exec Question...

I'm trying to understand the purpose of Backing up System State, Shadow Copy Components.

Simple questions about those 2 are, does System State allow me to have a full server crash, just have to reinstall the OS, then restore the System State, and Data backup and everything is back up and running on the server. (Such as AD, the Domain, SIDS and all that stuff)  And Shadow Copy components, does that allow me to go back to the shadow copies that were available as of that backup or?

Last thing... What is the best option to Backup a Domain Controler so that if I do have a DC failture, I can restore that DC the quickest, either on the same machine, or a different one.

The system state can save your job (if not your life)  but as iCoreKC says the best bet is to have at least2 Domain controllers. That way if one goes down users can continue to log on, get DHCP and DNS from the other.

If a domain controller fails and has to be scrapped or rebuilt from scratch all you need to do in install Windows, run DCPromo and Active Directory is replictaed from the remaining DC.

Thanks guys.  I do have 2 DC's one is just a crap box, for like you said, saving my job. The hefty duty one does run W2K3 with AD,DNS,DHCP, and runs the backup.

I currently think my PDC is having issues and probably needs to be redone so I'm trying to debate the quickest way to restore it.

How Often would you say to do a System State Restore. I have heard once a week, or when you make any changes, or....  THoughts?>

Appreciate all the help guys.

Weekly is good. However a SS backup is not large so you could probably do it nightly.

Strangely enough when I was doing it last week, my back up grew from 190GB to 700 GB
