We have a client that is running our web application from newly installed Windows XP,IE7 machines.<br />
One of the web pages launches a VB6 activex application. This works in IE6 but not in IE7.<br />
In IE7 it asks what to do with the VBD file the web page is launching rather than opening it.<br />

Is it possible to launch a VB6 ActiveX document (.vbd and a .cab file) from an IE7 webpage?<br />

I've read that it is no longer possible in IE7 :<br />

Visual Basic is Microsoft’s event-driven programming language and integrated development environment (IDE) for its Component Object Model (COM) programming model. It is relatively easy to learn and use because of its graphical development features and BASIC heritage. It has been replaced with VB.NET, and is very similar to VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), the programming language for the Microsoft Office product line.

Web Components are a set of standards currently being produced by Google engineers as a W3C specification that allow for the creation of reusable widgets or components in web documents and web applications. The intention behind them is to bring component-based software engineering to the World Wide Web. The components model allows for encapsulation and interoperability of individual HTML elements. Support for Web Components is present in Chrome and Opera and is in Firefox (with a manual configuration change). Microsoft's Internet Explorer has not implemented any Web Components specifications yet. Web Components consist of 4 main elements: Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, HTML Imports and HTML Templates.

Web Components

Web browsers are applications used primarily to display documents, files and media from the Internet, identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that can be a page, image, video or other file. Some browsers require the use of add-ons or extensions to safely render the information they receive; others have systems built into them to perform the same functions.
