KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR BLUE SCREEN (atapi.sys)

about a month ago i started getting a blue screen of death saying "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" somehow relating to ATAPI.SYS

i keep reading online that this has something to do with memory or hard disk errors, but i'm not certain how to find out more than i already have. i've done the following:

- ran memtest86... didn't see any errors
- in command line, ran "sfc /scannow" and it just finished without giving any kind of results

about a week ago, i received another blue screen "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" to which my computer wouldn't get past the Windows logo screen on startup without restarting. to my knowledge, i fixed this problem with my XP installation disk, doing a command line "chkdsk /r" which allowed me to startup as before.

things were "semi-back-to-normal", but i still get this KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR occasionally while i'm (from what i've observed) viewing flash content through IE, or watching video in WMP 11. my computer locks up for about a minute, then finally flashes me the blue screen.

i have an IBM ThinkPad T30 with a P4 Mobile -- 1.8 Ghz. 512MB RAM on Windows XP SP2

many thanks

It is having trouble reading/writing to page file. I suspect that the disk may be failing. Back up required data to be sure. Defrag the drive, this may improve matters. If errors continue, you could try a clean install, but if this doesn't resolve the issues completely, I would replace the drive.

well, i did a defrag and haven't had any problems so far...

give me about another week... i just wanna make sure that this could've been the reason.
Good luck.

it still seems to be happening, though not nearly as much. your solution may have helped a little.

i don't suppose you have any other tricks up your sleeve that i could give a stab?

would you say it's more that than a memory issue?
Unlikely to be ram (memory) as you ran memtest. It generally in my experience is an indicator of bad blocks on the drive and UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME makes it a near certainty. An article here - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/w2000Msgs/6096.mspx?mfr=true
