How to type symbols over existing symbol in office xp
I would like to create a few new symbols using the symbols in office xp and type them on top of each other.
Anybody any idea how to?

I would copy the symbols to a paint program (like MSPaint, or gimp) and manipulate them that way. You can include the resulting image in whatever documents you like.

would be very cumbersum. I want to - as an example - type (&) and put a / over the & - a symbol for witch!
There must be a way to stop the letter from going forward when typing a new letter.

Most applications allow for an overwrite mode, but that's exactly what it will do - overwrite. I've not seen any programs that allow for overtyping characters. I know I can make it happen on a dot-matrix printer (maybe a jet/laser...have to research), but not inside an application.
