Converting AVI movies

I've got some AVI movies which I want to be able to edit. Firstly is there any free software out there that anyone would recommend which is good when movies are dark and need to be lightened? Secondly, if I was to purchase some software what would you recommend? Thirdly, I have Adobe Premier v6 but when I try and import my AVI it says File uses unsupported compression file.

Convert movies or edit.
Number 3 : unsupported avi
Question: Can you view this avi file in Windows Media player? if no you man not have the correct drive for windows to use the file.  If you have to use another video player, them it may have it's own codecs built-in.
get this little applictaion called gspot
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
the program will open an avi file and try to render it, if it succeeds you have the correct Codecs if not then you need to download and installl the codec.
Here is a site that has codecs for download.
http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Packs.htm
You have options if you know what codec you need then you can download it and it should work with Adobe Premier.  If not you may have to download a codec pack, I have had pretty good success with the K-lite codec pack, allowing my computer to play videos that were unsupported byt WM9 (I don't like Windows Media Player 10)

If you would like to convert AVI to something else I would recommend WinAvi Converter you can convert just about any file to AVI/DVD/RM/WMV (if Windows Media player can play it, Winavi will convert it)

What kind of editing do you have in mind?
Some editors will convert? Is this a divx avi?
Using G spot is a good idea to make sure you have all the necessary codecs.
to edit an avi not convert I recomend virtual dub
free too here the guide how to use Virtual dub.

virtual dub and divx avi editor also includes the codecs

ASKER

I can view the movies with windows media player, I had just hoped that I would be able to import them into Premier without any trouble.

My main aim is to edit, reduce the size of the movie (not the quality) add fades from edits and be able to lighten my movies or selected areas if they are looking too dark.

I will look through your posts over the next couple of days, and hopefully find what I'm looking for.
Thanks
