Error 0x800ccc0f when sending mail
Using Exchange 2003 server & outlook / outlook express clients.
I am facing problems when i configure Outlook Express to use POP3 account from exchange server (giving error 0x800ccc0f). The account is configured correctly with all credentials .... i can receive emails ... but cant send out. POP3 protocol & service is enabled on the exchange server. The same error comes when i try to configure the account using IMAP as well. Interestingly the same account if configured through Exchange server option under Outlook works perfect .... send & receive is fine.
This is the error message in outlook express when i try to send:
"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'my account', Server: 'my server', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"
Since i cant send ... there seems to be some problem with SMTP ... but all accounts configured through exchange server under outlook can send/receive perfectly ... its only that i cant get Outlook Express configured using POP3.
I am using SMTP connectors on the exchange server .... and using smart hosts to deliver mails out.
Any leads what could be the problem?
Regards,
Pete

That is usually a sign of interference, firewall, antispam, antivirus etc, blocking the SMTP traffic. Check if your firewall has any kind of SMTP scanning features and disable them.
Both IMAP and POP3 are affected as they both send email by SMTP.
Any reason you are using POP3? The preferred remote access solution on Exchange 2003 is RPC over HTTPS.

Simon,
I have to use POP3 on one email account which is used for our new helpdesk software.
As for the interference, i dont understand why SMTP would work from Outlook & not work from Outlook Express .... my guess is ( just a guess ) there is something on the exchange server itself which needs to be resolved.
I am using SMTO connectors & smart hosts .... anything needs to be done on them?
And interference to be checked on the client or the exchange server?

I had the same problem: 0x800CCC0F. I could receive but not send email.
Turns out I was listed in the PBL (policy black list) of spamhaus.org
Removed my IP- adres en I could send mail again.

netsh winsock reset will usually fix this on WIndows XP Service Pack 2
