Watch Question

How many users will be accessing the service?

Do you need access to the service from off-site?

Exchange 2003 Server is very capable, but depending on the number of users, will place a load on your server. For lots (100+ users), I would advise a dedicated server. If you have many more users than that then you can look at clustering.

Agreed.
If you do go with exchange 2003 I would recommend having it on a windows 2003 machine with nothing else on it.  This server should join your domain, open up ports 25 and 443.  Get an SSL cert from rapdssl.com or some other reliable place.  Do NOT put the exchange server in a DMZ.  If you do then you are just opening up way too many security holes for your domain.

Once you install exchange 2003 it will pretty much take care of itself as long as you do proper maintenance on your server and such.
