Printer Cartridge web-based inventory tracker/notifier

I know that this has been asked before, but I have not seen a good answer.  I have a TON of printers at my company & the cartridges go empty all of the time.  I want to set up a web based (internal only) inventory system that a person will need to go & "Check out" a cartridge when they use it & then an email will be sent to me when the stock gets below a certain point (probably when it hits zero), that way I can re-order.  I would really like to do it for free, but am willing to pay a small price as long as there is a demo of the software.  I have a server set up to run PHP & MYSQL, so that is my preference.  Please let me know if you can find something

That kind of system is easy enough to build.  In MySQL, make a small database holding the cartridge information and an inventory field.  In PHP, set up pages to draw the list of parts from the table, and create forms to check them out.  When the user hits a button, perform the appropriate action on the inventory field (subtract 1, I would guess), and they are on their way.

The other side is either automating a daily check of inventory and emailing the results to you (not difficult), or simply drawing up a PHP report of inventory levels that you check whenever you feel like it (my preference).  Of course, you could do a hybrid...a report that you can check along with email alerts for extremely low levels.  Any kind of automation will need to run on a cron job.

The bigger problem you face is training the users to use the system.  Good luck with that...   :/

I should probably have said that I do not know much about builing any of that on my own...I am hoping for a pre-built one.
