SBS 2003 SP1 not backing up (sorry for long Post)

Hi,

I did a migration from old hardware to new. I had many problems but have now worked through all and everything is ok apart from my backup of SBS 2003 SP1. I had posted this before but i since then i had done more troubleshooting. This is the last of my problems so really want this fixed now.

Troubleshooting i have done:
1) I thought it was my anti virus software so completly uninstalled it. Went through Registry too see if any thing left and no indication of my AV left. tried a backup and it still fails on information store.
2) Analising third Party software to be causing problems but it cant be.
3) followed 3 guidlines. One from expert, microsoft and My AV support line to exclude particular files and folders even when AV running and no go.
4) tried backing up to different media, server and its own hardrive - again now go.
5) Tried the SBS backup as well as NT backup but not tried third Party backup.
6) Tried information store on its own and it wont work.

I sometimes have success records but reading further on it says that backup finished with errors so im asuming that it is the info store failing. Below is my full report from last night backup (info store)which reported it had failed.

I had many errors in event log. seems that when backup is being run it obviously involves all the microsoft exchange services and reports errors there. A frequent one i have is this:

DCHMIEL,

Thanks for posting back.  These errors are much more insighful than what we reviewed before.

I would surmise that your problems are related to the situation described in this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318429

Although that article doesn't describe the cause as being from moving your insatallation to a new server and tends to focus on third party applications even though they say that's not always the source of the problem, it is very clear in the "CAUSE" section that's what's happening:

CAUSE
"This issue occurs because of hardware-related issues on the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer or because of issues with the third-party applications that are installed on the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 computer. In certain database operations, including but not limited to online backup, the backup routine makes a call to the operating system to read a 4-KB page of data from the database on disk and write the data to tape. Before the online backup process writes the data that is returned from the operating system call to the tape, the online backup process compares the checksum value in the page header (recorded when this page was written to disk) to that being returned from the READ call. If the checksum values do not match, the Exchange database engine detects this and returns the error -613."

There's a nifty tool that came out recently that will handle the ESEUTIL and ISINTEG commands for you.  It's the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant which can be downloaded from here:  http://sbsurl.com/extra

If running that doesn't resolve your problems, then probably need to use EXMerge to export out all the mailboxes (http://sbsurl.com/exmerge) as a precautionary measure and then fully reinstall Exchange by following this KB Article: (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320202)

Ok great thanks for advise. I am hoping to do this tonight but flogged with work at the moment but realise this is important. the analizer looks really good. reading up on it now. I will asume best practice is to back up first. So i would have to stop the exchange services and then copy the databases and restart services. Is that sufficient. I would asume so as this is the MDBDATA folder so it includes the log files and databases). It is the only way i am able to access the databases. am i also right in asuming that i cant run this utility while in work hours.

Anyways will follow this advise as seems good advise. I have researched this quite a lot and it just seems like i need to start investigating the health of the info store and failing that i would take your sugestions and do the exmerge.

Ok thank you and will keep you informed.

Well i ran this utility which is a great utility by the way.

I started with 'Database troubleshooter'  - It returned no errors at all.

I then decided to test other areas such as performance which might be relavant.
Under performance troubleshooter
>Overwiew - Disk Bottleneck found
> Unussually high user activity detected (high RPC Rate)
performance - Lots of Logical Disk performance issues on drive hosting smtp
>Temp drive write latencies are high.

Under section analysing > In progress Virus Scanning calls close to thread limit.

I am desperatly trying to find an error that came up in regards to DNS and active directory but for the life of me i cant see it an more. I checked event viewer and it reoslved and no error. I am still trying to see if i can get that error.

All other sections seem fine

The only third part tools i have but only on 3 PC's is outlook backup so dont think the that would be causing. Performance seems fine from the desktops.

Anyways i feel thats another issue but in regards to the database all seems fine.

Oh, by the way... what do you mean by "outlook backup"???  You're running an Exchange Server.  Everthing should be on there anyhow.

Hi,

I am about to do this now. I asume its like doing it the manual way but obviously this is more automated. Ie i have to dismount the store through system manager then it will be able to run a repair and then i mount store again in system manager?

Outlook back up. I am using a tool EXBPA (I think). It backs up personal folders on the local PC's and can be backed up anywhere on the network.

Well will be trying this process now.

Hi, Have had a horrible experience. I wanted to back up the database files before i did any maintanance. So the only way i can do this is by stopping the exchange services, then copy databases and then restart the services. Now i cant get the information store service to work , nor exchange event, or pop 3 mailboxes. In event viewer i can see references to errors but all say information exchange not started.

ERROR:
Windows could not start the microsoft exchange information store on local computer.

I then decided that i will reinstall exchange which i did and i have the same thing. I am in a postition that i have all the backed up databases (4) with the log files but system manager is not even seeing them. What can i do. Please help.

Ok I uninstalled the AV as that can aparently cause a problem. Did that and i still cant start these services.

Basically i am at the situation where i have a backup of the databases and which is just a copy and paste of the IS store. How can i bring that into exchange or do I somehow have to get is service to work because even if open the exchange manager it does not see the databases and does not give me an option to mount or dismount.

Well just to keep you informed. After a lot of fiddling around I managed to get the services started via this link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319754/en-us

I am just running the recovery now. All looks good so far and AV still uninstalled. Will leave till after recovery. Will let you know what going on.

Thank you

well can you provide any good resourses on mounting the database. All seems good but after i ran the troubleshooter and it repaired the database it had no errors and process worked fine.

When i go to system manager i open the mailboxstore and try to mount it it get 'an internal p[rocessing error has ocurred. Try restarting the exchange system manager or the information store which i have done 100 times.

I looked in event viewer and have these.
MSExchangeSa   ID: 1005
MSexchangeFBPublish 8197
MSExchangeIS 9519

I think its referrring to the fact i dont have a mounted drive. Really want this working now.

thx
Well, sometimes you can make a bit of progress while I sleep!  :-)

Anyhow, at this point I would follow this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313184
