do you have Enterprise Manager?
can you check the startup parameters of the instance?
if you don't have / use Enterprise Manager, check in the registry directly:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTcontrol set\Servic es\MSSQLSe rver\
what are the entries you have there?
