XBOX 360 Elite Drive Replacement

Hello,

I just got an XBOX 360 Elite and Stupid me lost the recipt. and of course with my luck... My disk drive fails. So Now I can't return it for a new one, which I wouldn't want to do anyway cause all of my save data is on the hard drive.

I havn't had any luck with Microsoft about this problem. I would send it in for repair but I don't want to pay... nor have my 360 Elite away from my playing hands for who knows how long when I can replace the drive myself.

So my question: Is there a place that I can do to buy an XBOX 360 Elite drive to replace the one that I have?

Thanks,
Chad Reeves

You can get them from one of the many retailers here- they go for around $160- pretty steep.
http://www4.shopping.com/xPO-Microsoft-Microsoft-Hard-Drive-120-GB-Xbox-360

And there's always eBay- the drives don't come around in strong numbers, but they do appear consistantly.

search "xbox 360 elite hard drive", and leave "Search Title and Description" unchecked.

Here are two listings active now:

ASKER

Sorry, I don't think I made myself clear. It isn't my hard drive that has failed but my Disk Drive. The one inside the XBOX 360, not the one on top.
most retailers have the ability to reprint your receipt based on phone number, credit card or even your name.  i would call the place you bought it from and get a reprint of your receipt.

your warranty from Microsoft is 1 year.  even if you can't get a receipt, MS should KNOW that your Elite is not older than 1 year because it hasn't even been on the market for a year.  i would argue that point with MS if for some reason the retailer can't get a reprint of the receipt for you.

it is not a good idea to try to tinker with the internals of your console.  i think the best option is 1) get a receipt reprint or 2) point out to MS that your Elite can't be older than 1 year and their warranty covers 1 year.

Other options and pardon my cander if I seem a little straight forward, and I say this from owning a video game store and repairing systems.

It sounds to me like you were tinkering already with your 360 to replace the drive for a firmware hack. Guess you didn't know MS had changed a few things around so it doesn't work the same. In any case everyone has presented you with excellent options:

1) Go to where it was bought from and have it serviced/replaced
2) You have a 1 or 2 year warranty on the system by default from Microsoft now, they check the serial number as all the systems are registered to MS when you buy them, and should also be registered by you when you buy them.
3) If it actually was a gift, or ebay or wherever you got it from MOST times Walmart will take it as an exchange for the exact same product to replace. Not all the times, and also depends on the Walmarts.
4) If it actually was you tinkering and it is that bad, you can check Consolerepairshop.com or www.divineo.com who sell every part you need to make your own console or repair anything damaged. Divineo is where I go to buy replacement parts when I fix others consoles.
5) Lastly if you did tinker with it and don't want Microsoft to know, there is no reason to worry. Many and I mean THOUSANDS of people have sent in their destroyed systems with water damage, animal waste damage and of course end user modification damage (Solder, mod chips, etcc). And you know what Microsoft did? They replaced almost all of them, and others charged minimal costs to repair/replace. They do not get mad, they do not scold anyone, they want you to have a system as it allows them to get more money.

If you are concerned about your data on your HDD, you can go to BEst Buy and buy the $9-$20 backup cable that will connect your HDD to your PC and you can copy all contents of your 360 to your PC. There are many 3rd party cables, and now MS has even licensed their own to transfer information from one HDD to another for those people that only had the small 20GB hadd to the newer 120/160GB HDD.
check www.ebay.com and get a drive like yours and you can determine what drive you have by opening your console and reading the label on the top of the drive. the best way to replace it is to get a drive just like what you had and dumping the firmware from your drive to your pc via SATA connection and possibly running a boot disc to get your drive into "mode-b" to flash. once you have your firmware dumped you can reflash it the same way you dumped it and you will have a working drive.
Ok like previously stated you have few options.

1. First try returning it to Wal Mart as Wal Mart will take any thing back without receipt for store credit.
If this doesn't work well you just got your self a headache heres what you need to do.

2. www.etech4sale.com these guys carry spare 360 drives, especially the ones that can be reprogrammed.
Once you have the drive you need to extract your drive key from your old drive, find a firmware for the bought drive, and insert a key into that firmware, then flash the drive you just purchased with the newly created firmware.

option 2 is a pain in the ass, and it requires alot of reading www.xboxhacker.net, it also requires you to purchse hardware that will enable you to flash the drive, mainly the VIA6421 sata adapter. Then you need software.
If youre going for option 2 i would recommend finding someone in your area that flashes drives.
I'm not sure if you are aware of this - Microsoft recently upped the warranty on the 360 to three years.  This is due to a hardware design issue.

If I were you, I would contact XBox support at 800.4.MY.XBOX

I had to send my unit in for the Red Ring on Death not too long ago.  You hold on to your hard drive and just send in the console.  The turn a round was quick.  The ended up replacing my original unit with another refurbished one.

One thing to be aware is that Live Arcade games will probably need to be deleted and re-downloaded due to issues with Digital Rights Management (DRM) being tied to your gamertag and console ID.

I have heard of people receiving their unit back without being repaired because the warranty label on their console was breached.  I would just send it in...
Thank you everyone for trying to help me out with this. I just sent it in to Microsoft. I havn't heard anything back from them yet, but hopefully I should get my 360 elite back in a week or two. This way I can finish my MLB 2k7 Season!

Thank you all for your help with this.
Good job on sending it back in. Just as an FYI, they are backlogged on system repairs. The ones I havent been able to fix have sent off to Microsoft and a few people are still waiting almost 2-3 months for theirs back. I'm only saying this so you wont be surprised if it takes longer than expected. Also I have found that calling and complainign on the phone to them about the time it takes to get it back DOES help. 2 systems have came back within 1-2 weeks while other systems were still of awaiting repair.
Thanks Jstncase! I am not worried about the time frame, I don't have any spare time to play on it right now anyway.
