You might also

1) Close Notes and delete the cache.ndk file
2) In Notes, compact the Desktop
3) If none of the above help, let us  know.

Most likely, it is the unred sequencer that is corrupt.  The way the Notes client maintains unread marks is a little weird.  Lotus wants you to be able to "synchronize" unread marks from yoru client to multiple replic acopies (typically, a local mail replica, a primary server replica, and a cluster server replica).  To do this, it maintains a list of all unred mark changes, so that if you read a message on your local, then the next time you open the server copy, that particular message automatgically gets marked read on the server as well.  Notes maointains a certain number of marks before it recycles.  Not sure, but the number 6,000 sticks in my head.  The 6,001 unread change would then overwite the oldest one.

If this uncread cache (stored, I think, in desktop6.ndk) goes bad, you would get this message.  One way to fix it is to replair or replace the desktop.  Anotehrw way that might work is for the user to merely mark all messages read in each copy of the mailbox, then selected all mailbox icon pairs for the following opeartion: Edit -> Unread Marks -> Synchronize

Notge: When you send a message, the following databases are affected:
the copy of the mail file you are in
your desktop (to update unread counts -- there is a new message saved to the Sent view, and it must be marked as already-read
local names.nsf (resolve addresses)
server names.nsf (also reoslver -- unlikely to be a cause here, you don't maintain read marks in it)
sometimes cache.ndk
sometimes bookmark.nsf
sometimes local log.nsf
server log.nsf
local mail.box (depedns on config)
server mail.box, mail1.box, or mail2.box
