Setup a clone exchange server

I would like to set up an exchange server which will be a copy of the existing exchange server 2003, and there will be synchronization between both servers.
I need to restore the public store from the back tape to the new exchange server and export the public folders to  the exchange server 20003 already in production.

Can someone show me the steps??

I wonder why Microsoft didn't think about coming up with a tool to restore PF just like Exmerge does with mailboxes.

thanks

What are you trying to achieve here apart from performing a one off restore of the public folders?

A backup/additional server like you described, the public folder store can be setup to replicate between 2 servers but mailboxes will not so this setup is no good for prociding users with fault tolerance.  A solution with a "seamless" switch to a backup server is going to cost a lot for specialised software that can replicate everything including the mailbox store.

To restore just the public store you can build a "Recovery" server which is a copy of your existing server (same server name, exchange organisation, storage group etc) and restore the public folder onto that server.  Then install outlook on that recovery server, export the requested public folder to a PST, move that PST over to a client on the exchange box and re-import the data into the original public folder store.

Yes I want to build a copy of my existing exchange server in order to be able to restore public folders.
I need a step by step link to achieve this.

any updates?????
Ok, completely spare hardware 1 server solution.  Build this off the network and make it a clone of the xisting setup as much as possible.

* Install Windows Server, setup the disks similarly to the existing server (ie same drive letters, same server name etc)
* Install Active Directory on this server using the same domain details as your existing AD domain.
* Install Exchange Server into the same location as on the original server, using the same Exchange Organisation name and Storage Groups.
* Run a restore of the exchange databases.  You will need to go into the database properties in Exchange System Manager and check the "This database can be overwritten by a restore" checkbox.
* At that point if you have duplicated everything correctly, server name, exchaneg org, database location etc then the databases should mount.  If you have problems mounting the database try deleting the private information store files (priv.edb & priv.stm)  The public and private databases are closely linked and will no start if they are in a different state to each other.  Deleting the private databse will cause Exchange to recreate it when you try and mount the store.  If that does nto work then look at the "Legacy DN" documentaion in that link I have below.
* Install Outlook onto the server and export the required public folder to a PST file and then re-import that PSt back into your live environment.

Have a look at this for more info document for more info under "Exchange 2000 Alternate Server Recovery"  http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2000/support/dbrecovr.mspx

This is a basic guide, you could go wrong in various places so it's best to start the procedure and then come back to us if you have problems.  It's relatively straight forward if it all goes well.
