Problem connecting XBOX 360 to Belkin Router

I have a Belkin ADSL Router which works fine with laptops and other devices using wireless connections. For some reason the XBOX 360 refuses to connect. I have tried disabling all the firewalls (windows, mcafee, router), disabled all security (was 64bit WEP). Have tried setting a manual IP address, remembering to put the router ip address in the right place (at least I think it is), I've added the mac addresses of all components on the network (as well as disabling mac address filtering altogether). The router is 802.11b/g - some guy in a shop reckons it only works with 802.11a, but seeing as the adapter box clearly states compatable with a,b,g it shouldn't be that. I was also told that I needed to open a number of ports on the firewall, but surely if remove the firewalls that gets round the open port issue?

The wireless network is clearly visible to the xbox, with decent signal strenth - it just won't connect. The other puzzling thing is that nothing appears in any of the firewall security logs. I'd have thought it should appear somewhere at least trying to get onto my network.

What won't connect?  Live or you cannot connect to the wireless network?  HAve you tried manually putting in the SSID for the router?

It won't connect to the wireless network at all. It has the SSID already (I see it on the screen) and he router is on broadcast(which someone else has suggested. I'll try manually entering it.
Hi again. I tried manually setting up an ad-hoc network and manually entering a connection, still nothing connecting...
Do you have DHCP turned on?

Hi Zephyr, ABL and anyone else who might have an idea...

All written ten mins ago...

"Have downloaded latest firmware for the router, no change. I have managed a very straightforward wired connection with the router, streaming music and video no problems at all. I have tried all combinations of wireless channel, nothing working so far.  One thing that did work, but is very limited...I set up the wired connection. Then, I disconnect the Computer through the Setup Panel. I then disconnect the wired conection and immediately connect the wireless adapter. If I then test the connection (wireless) it passes all the tests. Unfortunately it can't then connect to a computer.

Another odd feature which might be a clue (?). I accidentally left a manual setting in place for the network (ie. manual ip etc). Although the computer is connected and streaming is working, it doesn't appear in the LAN/DHCP client list..."

Anyway - switched security a couple of times, and it seems a bit more stable. The green light has stayed on for a while and a couple of reboots. However, it is still occasionally going red indicating interference (?)

The biggest problem now is that it refuses to detcet a sharing computer - even though it worked fien when wired????

My last line was referring to the fact that I eventually (accidentally) got it (the 360) connected through wireless. Everything else (2 laptops, a pinnacle showcenter and a cellphone with wifi all work fine). I have since lost the connection again, but can still get it working with a cable. The reason I think it worked is that I disconnected a wired connection then immediately plugged in the wireless adapter, while at the same time having a fixed ip address/dns etc so that the wireless part of the 360 didn't need to find a connection for itself. Setting the ip/dns manually without making a wired connection first just never works.

Have purchased a new netgear router to try ( I can get a refund if it still doesn't work).
Sorry catching this kind of late. Once you have the new router setup and configured as some of them were mentioning, start slow and simple.

Can you get the X360 onto the internet?
Work with the XLB Connector on the 360 to ensure you can get onto the internet
Once you are connected to the internet then try and connect to a local share. Assuming you are running XP Media Center Edition.
Is your X360 Modified?
Does your PC have any connectivity issues of any sort? Meaning can it also connect to the internet? Can it now connect to the internet with your X360 plugged in?

Sorry for the flurry of questions.
Too all the idea suppliers, cheers. In case I hadn't been clear enough - the Belkin router works fine with everything except the 360. It's a problem I've seen posted all over the web. Mostly the problem other people describe is with older routers, but mine was only a couple of years old and had UPnP (often cited as a problem). Anyway, I now have a netgear and it worked instantly. The settings are identical to the Belkin but there a few extras which might explain why it works - (i) it has RIP routing protocols and (ii) UPnP has configurable advertisement "time to live" and period.
