User cannot access QDLS shared folder on iSeries (AS400)

we have shared folders set up on the iSeries, two of which users in our accounting group are supposed to have access to. One is called CONVERT which is mapped to J: on the users PC. the other is QDLS which is mapped to I:.

we have one user that can access the J: drive just fine, but not the I: drive. we've verified that her username and password are the same on windows and the iSeries.  other users can access both drives.

one other note... when i try to access permissions on the shared folder in iSeries Navigator, i receive an error message "connect: Address is invalid on local machine, or port is not valid on remote machine"

your help is appreciated.

istate:

For the second part, are you referring to attempting to access permissions on your own PC? or on the PC of the user that has trouble?

How are you navigating to "permissions"? Are you drilling down through File Systems-> Integrated File System-> ? or are you opening the NetServer server and accessing permissions for the shares there? (AFAIK, the second option should be used.)

Tom,

Adding the user to DIRE worked.

I was trying to access the permissions in iSeries Navigator from my own PC by drilling into File Systems-> IFS and the right clicking on the shared folder and choosing permissions.  I am not sure about the NetServer option; can you elaborate on that?

Thanks for the help. -Adam
Adam:

Navigate down through the server connection to Network-> Servers-> TCP/IP. Double-click or open the iSeries NetServer server. The window that opens expands down into Shared Objects and Sessions. Expanding Shared Objects will allow you to right-click to get a Permissions menu item.

I'm not sure if there's a reliable way to get through to Permissions any other way.

If I'm not clear, let me know.

i get the same error message when going that route as well.
Any chance you can supply the msgid? What results from either CWBPING from a Windows command line or from [Verify Connection...] (right-click a connection, navigate Connection to Server-> Verify Connection...)?

there is not a msgid given.it is a popup window with a title of "iSeries Navigator". it has a red x icon and it says: "connect: Address is invalid on local machine, or port is not valid on remote machine" with an OK button. i get the same message twice.

here are the results from the CWBPING

Sigh... one of _those_ messages... Immediate guess is that unless someone has already seen this and solved it, only IBM knows.

For these kinds of "errors", I've usually found that some system configuration element was wrong. On the AS/400 side, it's _usually_ manifested through some joblog message in a server. This would be either the File host server, the NetServer TCP/IP server or the Remote Command/Distributed Program Call host server.

For any/all of those, best way to track them down is through the iNav Connection-> Network-> Servers-> [either] TCP/IP [or] iSeries Access. Then, right-click and select [Server Jobs]. That does a better job of locating relevant jobs than any explanation. Joblogs can be reviewed after there.

However, the same kind of message-box might appear at that point. If it does, we might have a narrowed-down scope to search because only particular server problem areas show up then.

when i attempt to access the 'Server Jobs' option on the context menu for any server listed under Network -> Servers -> TCP/IP or iSeries Access I receive the following error: "Unable to retrieve job list from system Iseries.istate.com."  again, no message id.

tom, i've accepted your solution for the original problem.  since the problem is resolved, i don't see a need to persue the secondary issue. if i need to figure that out in the future, i'll open a new question.
thanks for the help.

I still have the EE notification in my inbox. If I get the time to work it all the way through, I'll see about adding it here. Technically, it's an IBM Support question, but I'm pretty sure I could dig it out -- if I just get the time to work the whole sequence through.

One issue is that there are _always_ multiple possible issues with any network-related question. Maybe it's hardware firewall. Maybe it's software firewall on either end of the connection. Maybe it's IP filtering (outside of a firewall). Maybe it's a TCP/IP configuration error. Maybe it's an authority error. Maybe...? All you know much of the time is that an expected response didn't come back when it should.
