IE 7.0. will not open an Excel file.  I have tried files that are located on a web server as well as a local Excel file.  Other browsers that I run have no difficulty opening Excel files as well as older versions of Internet Explorer on other PCs.  Is there a security setting in IE 7 that must be configured before it will open an Excel file?

I am running IE 7.0.5730.11 on a Windows XP Pro SP2 platform with Office 2003 Pro installed.

Hi cgcmq,

Do you get any error messages, or does it just not open?

I get the standard IE7, 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' which I am assuming is a 404 error.  I have verified that the file exists by navigating to it with other browsers (Opera & Firefox).

Greetings cgcmq !

In Office 2007, Microsoft have changed the default behavior to not open Excel file inside IE. you can change things through the Windows UI.  In WindowsXP, open an explorer window and open Tools / Folder Options.  Switch to the File Types tab and navigate to the document type you wish to open in IE.  In this case, select .XLS:

From here, click Advanced, and then check the ?Browse in Same Window? checkbox.
Checking this box will revert you to the behavior you saw in previous versions.  Note that you must do this for each document type you want to browse to in IE.

Working now, thanks!

The setting for XLS already had 'Browse in Same Window' checked but 'Confirm open after download' was not.  I checked this and now it works fine.

Cheers.
