Sharepoint 2007 Unknown Error for external users only

Hello, can anyone who has experience with external use of sharepoint help with this issue?

The setup:

MOSS 2007 Enterprise running on Win2003 R2 in a medium farm configuration with separate SQL server (2000) and separate domain controller (Win2000).

Internal users have an Alternate Access Mapping via Default Zone to the http address.
External users have an Alternate Access Mapping via External Zone to the https address.

Additionally external users come in via ISA edge firewall but is set to make it look like requests are coming from the ISA server itself. Allow delegation has been enabled on web server and isa server.

The problem:

Internal and external logins and browsing is working excellent - overall everything appears in good working order.

For some reason however, when external users attempt to create new content - a workspace or list - yields a Sharepoint Unknown Error page with no helpful info.  There is nothing registered in the event log either.  This only affects external users, including when I login as admin from outside so it is not portal site permissions.  There is no error when adding an item to an existing list, just when creating new content.  The same accounts work perfectly internally.

I would love some suggestions on what to look at or how to further troubleshoot!!

Did you extend a web application for external user? If yes, did you use different system accounts other than the one for the original one?

BTW, were external users able to upload a document?

Thanks very much! That's exactly where I needed to look ...

I did not do this correctly at first.  I made a Default and Extranet access mapping point at the same web application and did not extend.  It resulted in okay browsing but with some problems.

Found instructions to do this correctly and once I extended the sharepoint site to a new IIS application to the Internet zone for access mapping, and updated ISA, the problem went away - so far everything works exactly the same as onsite but under SSL - that's perfect!

    Hi There,

I think I have the same Problem, With Sharepoint 2007 and ISA 2003. Everything is fine when the Portal is being access within the networks, but when connecting to the Portal on the Internet, the Portal looks fine but with a limited capabilities such as:
       1. Going to List Settings of a List,  SSL Security pops up.
       2. Datasheet View does not work
       3. Document Item workflow page does not show.
       4. KPI List does not show.
    and etc.

I tried Extending the Web Application, but failed due to some errors being reported, I tried playing with Alternate Access Mappings but the same problems occurs. I believed ISA is somewhat related with these problems. I Found several Topics from Technet but less helpful on this situations. I would appreciate much if you could provide more information.

    Thanks and Best Regards.

As a first step I would try to complete successfully extending the web application to a new IIS virtual server and map it to the Internet Zone (leaving your original IIS virtual server mapped to Default Zone).  If you can provide more information on the errors that occur when you try to do this, I will try to help if I can.  Setting up the Alternate Access alone will only get it partially running as described above.
