I would go for at least 2gb RAM in terms of hardware.

I use VMWare Images, and allocate around 1200mb to the image. The Image holds MOSS 2007, SQL 2005, Office 2007 (incl. SharePoint Designer) Visual Studio and is around 10GB in size... once it warms up, it runs really well.

I use VMWare player to run the Image, and run it off a USB 2.0 Hard Drive, oddly it runs better than off the local Hard Disk.

    Hope that helps...

Thanks for the tip about the USB Hard dripve ajaycg, gonna see if that improves my performance (sorry for hijacking the question).

As far as Hardware is concerned, I completely agree that 2gb is the minimum. A fast processor and a big screen are a plus of course. I really wonder how much  time I lose while "waiting" for stuff to happen.

I have the following new parts to build a programmers PC as the laptop doesn't seem to be cost effective at this point.
    1- Mini-tower case
    1b- 400 W ATX P/s w/ 20 to 24 pin MOBO power adapter
    2- DDR2 (2 GBs) - I plan to order 2 more GBs from Kingston
    3- ASUS MOBO # M2A-VM
    4- AMD Athlon x64 dual core 4400+ (2.2 GHz)
    5- 20" LCD ACER
    6- 256MB Graphics
7-300GB SATA2 16 HDD (I'll put it in an external case.) Thanks
    8- OS = MS Server 2003 R2 (x64 )

Is there anything that I'm missing that I should have?

I plan to use MS PC VM 2007.

    Thanks AJAYCQ.

    7- external case

If you are using a normal deskptop pc I would not use an external case. Laptop hd's are slower, while external hd's are usually a normal hd inside a casing. So in that case it would be better to keep the hd inside the pc.
