Error 46: Could not load or find the QuickTime ActiveX control under Vista

Trying to use Quicktime 7.2 under Vista Ultimate. Install goes fine but when I try to run it I get "Error 46: Could not load or find the QuickTime ActiveX control". Goggled it and found a bunch of references to some registry, unable to make any changes to the permission. I'm currenly logged in as a Domain Admin. Tried uninstalling and reinstall without any luck.

Try doing it as the "real" Administrator, as described on this page:

http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/vista_administrator_activate.htm
When you execute the installer, do it with administrator privileges. Find the installer program, right click it, and select Run As Administrator. This will open up the system so that any protected files or registry settings can better be modified.

Apparently Apple is aware of problems that some people have been having with QuickTime. The following web site is asking Vista users to provide feedback about problems they are encountering:
https://appleseed.apple.com/QTVistaSurvey/run/

Check out this link for a possible fix though: http://research.gerger.com/?view=lab&aID=1006.

Scroll down the page a little to the section that starts with "Apple Quicktime 7.x Annoyances". It gives instructions to use a tool from Microsoft that resets certain permissions, and while the tool was originally created for an earlier version of Windows, the author reports that this fix does work in Vista. However, I would think that when opening the command prompt, you will also want to run that with Administrator privileges. To do that right click on the command prompt icon and select "Run as administrator". Or you can also click the start button and in the search box near the bottom, type CMD and then hold down CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER. This combination tells Vista to execute that command with Administrator rights.

jattree, how about some feedback?

Found this and it worked for me:
After installing quicktime latest version in windows vista it didnt start. It may give you an error message saying

Error 46: Could not find or load activex control

The Solution

There is an old NT utility called SubInAcl.exe that can be used to reset permissions in Windows XP and also in Vista.

Step 1: Download subinacl.msi from here and install it.

Step 2: Download modified version of reset.cmd from here and save the file in
C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools

Step 3: Open Command Prompt and type the following (hit Enter):

cd c:\program files\windows resource kits\tools

Step 4: Now type reset.cmd and hit Enter (You need to make sure you are logged in as administartor)

You will see the Command Line Tool running for some seconds. The issue should have been fixed and Quicktime should run again.
