Turn your IIS service off before you install the Apache service. Both attempt to use port 80, and IIS was there before.

I would have recommended on removing it from the "Windows Components" in the Add/Remove Programs.

It seems to me, to be honest, that the answer is yes. Maybe some spyware, maybe something else, but your port 80 is being used by something.
You can, for that matter, try to alter the ports used by Apache. Go to C:\Program Files\Apache<probably some version>\conf
and edit (notepad) the file httpd.conf
Search for the line starting with "Listen" and change it to look something like this:
Listen :2000
Save and restart your apache service. It it works, you will be able to browse to:
http://localhost:2000
and all your pages will reside there. It's good enough for development usages.

It's that port 80 is being used (somehow). That's all. If you'll use another port, you should be fine.

For your own needs it is OK. You can develop flawlessly and ignore the port (:2000) definitions. I assume this project won't reside on your own desktop for the rest of your life, and when you move it to another server, it will be accessible through port 80 (the default) by the users. No need to worry. This type of setup can assist in multiple-platforms development as well (although this is not the case here).

The answer to your first question is yes. It is only on your own computer.

The password for phpmyadmin... I have no clue. I do it manually. Try without password, or read the README which comes with the appserv package.

During installation you have selected a root password. The username is 'root' the password - you have selected.
