recover data after a laptop has been reimaged

I have a coworker that used Ghost to reimage a computer for a user. The user says that there is data missing. Question: Is there any way to recover data after a laptop has been reimaged using Ghost?
The OS is XP Spc 2 it an IBM hard drive & PC.

You can use a recovery software like getdataback ntfs.
Not sure you will get great results though as the data has probably been overwritten by the imaging process.

2. You may need to unhide hidden files to see them. Open Windows Explorer folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

3. You may need to take ownsership of folders and files to access them.

war1 & nightmare2,

Thanks.

Does anyone know if the ghost software has a built in function to recover this data? I read somewhere that I can recover this drive using Ghost, but I can not locate any detail instructions or someone that has used Ghost to recover data.

Your best hope is GetDataBack for ntfs as suggested above. Failing that consider a professional data reecovery company.

Getdataback worked pretty good.. But still not able to get the data that I am looking for. If anyone has any other product that I can try please feel free to post. I will keep the posting open for a few more days... Thanks for all the expert advice so far!!

overwritten data has to be recovered using forensic programs which cost a lot, and take much time , i know of none around for the hobbyist

If GetBackData does not work, then use

Ontrack
http://www.ontrack.com/
or
Easy Recovery
http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoveryprofessional/

Both are expensive to use.  Professional data recovery company is next, as suggested first by r-k.

It doesn't seem too promising, but if nothing is working then contact Gillware (link by nobus above). They have a special for $400 and you only pay if they recover. I had a chance to use them earlier and they are very good.

Yes. I agree it does not look too promising... I will have to check with the user before I spend $400 bucks.

r-k:,

How long did it take them to recover your data?

"How long did it take them to recover your data?"

About 3 or 4 working days in my case (not counting shipping time), but they can give you an estimate for both time and cost when you call them. One thing I liked is that I was talking with a knowledgeable tech person almost right away rather than a sales person. That plus the fact they actually recovered our data, which was from a damaged raid-0 so a somewhat different situation than yours.
