compressed log files: .log.3, how do I open up these files so I can view the orignal log files

I have log files that have been compressed so that they read:
xxxx.log.5         5 files

These files are from a Windows Server 2003 system

I'm not an IT or programmer.
Any idea how I can open up these compressed files to view the original log files?

The log files are ascii text files with each line being for a different record that was processed.

    Accepted Solution

Try right-clicking the file, choose Open and Choose "Select the program from a list". Then choose Notepad. Check if you can now read the file.
If Notepad doesn't work, do the same operation and choose Winzip from the list (if it is available).

you might also try wordpad if the files are large (greater than 500K)-- notepad doesn't like opening large files.
