Backup exec upgrade

Greeting everyone!
My backup exec upgrade is failing and symantec has recommended upgrading to back up exec 11d

Here is what i have im mind

boot up using a linux cd and copying all the files over to an external hard drive
export the registry
install back up exec 11d
test back up
and if for some reason this failes can i just copy all the files back to the directories and add the backup reg that i made...

does this sounds like a good strategy?

Hiya jimmy.

What op system are you running backup exec under?  When you say "upgrade is failing", which version are you upgrading from and to, and what are the failure symptoms\messages?

9.1 ought to work, we're using it still. What happens if you try to start the job agent manually?

For backing up the local server you can stop BE services and use ntbackup instead.

GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!
Hey, that *does* sound hardware-related.  I wouldn't start upgrading your software until you work out if its your tape drive that's had it.

For instance, does good old Start\All Progs\Accessories\System Tools\Backup recognise your tape drive?  If not, time to reload its drivers.

By the way, if you're worried about tonight's backup (and I would be) you can use the OpSystem Backup prog mentioned above to back up to folders rather than the tape drive (Backup Exec should let you do this as well, but might not if the service won't start) .
Ooh - you mentioned you had an external hard drive - use System Tools\Backup to backup to that tonight.
Yep.
Looks like hardware issues from here.

Look for a new driver.
...or/and diagnostics from the manufacturer.
thank you guys im currently working on getting the latest tape drives and running some diagnostics....
well i was able to get the tape back to work by restarting the server now im not able to back up we were able to recreate the job and im having another issue...gimmie a second im still researching thank you for you patience..
Thank you guys i was able to upgrade to 11d thankfully symantec has made it really easy to upgrade to the new version by simply following the prompts (well getting the license key is a whole different issue)..woohoo
glad to be of service
Glad you sorted it, jimmy - not having backups is an instant stress for anyone who takes their IT seriously.  Thaks for the points, too.
