Ex 5.5 to Ex 2003...

going to be upgrading Exchange 5.5 sitting on a w2kserver to Exchange 2003.  I have a new server with w2k3 and Exchange 2003.  What are the steps in moving the mailboxes over to E2k3?

Before all of this I will be upgrading AD 2000 to AD 2003 with a swing migration, which is okay and i have all of the notes for that.

I see a lot of info with Ex 5.5 and a Win NT 4.09 domain but we are already on a 2000 AD
Any info on ex 5.5 to ex 2003 with ADC and Move Mailbox wizard would be great....
Database size is only about 16GB.

I was going to run the deployment tools and follow everything.  Installing the ADC on the new Exchange 2003 server was the next step.  i just wanted to make sure I was on the right track.

Run Exchange Deployment tool which will run trhough wizards to check environment and than help me install the Exchange 2003 software, once installed than install the ADC to synch, than run move mailbox wizard from deploy tools than remove old ex 5.5 server...

Am I on the right track?

Peter
the ADC needs to be installed prior to Exchange 2003 install
If ADC is not installed prior to the Exchange install then Exchange 2003 will not know that a 5.5 Exchange ORG exists and if does not know about the 5.5, it will not be able to join 5.5
Once the ADC has been installed and configured, give it some time to replicate between AD and 5.5 directory.
Once that has been done, install Exchange 2003.
After Exchange 2003 has been installed, the Public folders need to be replicated first and then go for the mailboxes.

The ADC would go on the new Exchange 2003 server, right? or the new AD 2003 server? I can find that on the Ex2003 CD?

I am upgrading the AD from 2000 to 2003 tonight with a swing migration, once all okay than tackling the 5.5 to 2003 upgrade....

I am lucky that the 5.5 is running on a 2000 server and not NT 4.0...
Install the ADC on the Exchange 2003 server.
It should be in the ADC folder in the CD

Question:
I will be running Domainprep and forest prep on the Exchange 2003 server but i will not be making it a DC by running dcpromo. The deployment tools will run me through the process on the Exchange so i will follow the wizard...   Just read an article about not making the excahnge 2003 server a BDC...
Correct me if i am wrong. thanks
Peter
yes, it is recommended not to install exchange on a DC

Should I upgrade the Exchange 5.5 ADC to 2003 ADC before even doing the AD 2000 to 2003 upgrade?

what do you mean the 5.5 ADC?
there needs to be only one ADC installed from the Exchange 2003 SP2 CD

I assume the existing Ex 5.5 running on w2k server is talking to the 2000 AD via a connector???? or no???
How is the Exchange 5.5 talking to 2000 AD

May be reading to much...
Exchange 5.5 will not talk to the AD unless a ADC is configured.
By default ADC is not installed and configured when there is a 5.5 server

How can I check to see if their other consultant configured a ADC for 5.5?
check in the Add remove programs
moreover if you just have a 5.5 server then i am sure that the other consultant has not installed and configured ADC

yes just one 5.5 server....
If you already have an AD domain, then you will have an ADC somewhere.
You need to find that ADC and upgrade it. The ADC does not have to be on the Exchange 2003 Server.
However if you don't update the ADC then the Exchange 2003 install will fail.

So if ADC exist on a 5.5 server, upgrade the ADC to ex2003 on the ex 5.5 server????

I still have to install the ADC on the new Ex2003 server before I start the deployment tools....

What i am thinking is new....

Keep the 2000 AD for now and just extend the schema to allow a 2003 server.  Than move over the Ex5.5 to the 2003 on a new server.

Another evening perform a swing migration of AD 2000 to AD 2003.

Another evening perform the Ex2003 to Ex2007 migration.....

Does this make more sense?

I don't want to swing over the AD and run into a problem, than also have the Ex5.5 connector broken as well....

It does not look like ADC is install anywhere on this network.. the Ex5.5 server is a BDC.... is that why the ADC is not needed?

Hi

I don't like upgrading from 2000/2003 to 2007. Because they work with a very different way

So if you have an extra server(or workstation) to install(migrating from 5.5) a 2000/2003 and then install the 2007 in the real server, and work both until you disconnect the 2000/2003 i think is the best way

And check the Outlook versions, because of the Exchange 2007, don't work with older version

Follow this url.

Is a good example how to...

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/11/29/431687.aspx

And has also some links to get more information, and get the work done.

And this is a great example how to... from 2000/2003 to Exchange 2007

Hope this help

"Than move over the Ex5.5 to the 2003 on a new server."

Does that mean you are planning to move Exchange 5.5 on to a Windows 2003 server? If so, you can't do that. Exchange 5.5 will not install on Exchange 2003.

Upgrade the ADC that is currently in use, then do a standard swing migration.
You will have an ADC somewhere if E5.5 is installed in a 2000 AD.
