Extract data from Active Directory using scrips

I would like to extract information relating to users and computers from active directory in data format.  I find the information in Active directory useful for updating fixed asset-computer equipment in Accounting System.  However, I am not sure if there a way to extract data out from active directory?    Any pointers?
