cannot install / uninstall adobe reader 7 or 8

Hi everyone....Have gone to EE searched for an answer, typed in......cannot install / uninstall adobe reader 7 or 8 and found several answers....but none have helped me..........have run windows install cleanup... it deleted adobe reader and photoshop starter which I never used anyway..... Have deleted every reference to adobe and reader.....from my PC, program files, common files and registry.......have downloaded new reader 8 from adobe site but still fails reinstall at 85% with the request for a CD  and will not accept any path to a CD with adobe reader 7 or 8 on ...........have reverted to re install reader 7  but about the same % get the message....
A more functional version is installed! installation will now terminate...........
I realize there must be a file /s somewhere  or keys in the registry stopping installation.......... but how do I find it or them  Or over come this problem .........Regards Steedy

Normally, this should not be a problem -- all you do is install Acrobat 6 or 5, and it will overwrite all the settings and then you can install 7 or 8 as you wish.  Realize, both 7 and 8 are full of bugs, So I use ver. 6.

Check out these links first, they handle the problem of uninstalling 7 or 8 --

What I do in cases like this is I manually edit the registry -- regedit -- and search for every occurrence of Acrobat 7 or acrobat 8 and I remove all those keys, reboot, and that usually does it.  You might want to backup the registry first, in case you make a mistake doing registry edits, they can affect the OS stability

Also check the user profiles on the system for an Adobe folder and delete it. I also disconnect from the net when installing some things to determine if it is relying on online info. If it is, maybe the server is timing out preventing the install.
1. Install the latest version you have again if you have not properly removed it.
2. reboot and uninstall the latest version you had
3. install the older version

If it does not work, you may try registry cleanup using a cleaning software or manually
search registry for acrobat. (start > run > regedit > CTRL+F)
you can remove the entries listed by under the name of acrobat.

Agreed, I would like to know the out come. It is of much greater value to others if a conclusion is reached.

Hi I have just had this problem and its taken me a while to find a solution.  I could not reinstall or uninstall Adobe Reader 8.  To fix the problem I used the MS install clean up wizard, install this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Once installed run it and remove "Adobe Reader 8 install".  This allowed me to then instal Adobe Reader 8.

Hope this helps,
Andy.
