I have a PC running Windows 2000 Professional SP3 as a client in a corporate domain.  Problem is that the PC freezes at shutdown when "Closing network connections".  PC has been left overnight in this state, and does not power off.  The unit has to be powered off manually every day.  What could be causing this, and how can it be corrected?

There could be a wrong or bad chipset driver or other driver installed.

Get the latest Servicepack and then install all the windowsupdates. Also check the manufacturer's homepage for driver updates and install them. That can help.

try dissabling/disconnecting the network card, or try with another one, it can simply be bad.

Thanks for the suggestions. What was causing the  PC to hang at shutdown was that it was trying to synchronize offline files that had been moved, or no longer existed.  Went to Windows Explorer, clicked on Tools, Folder Options, Offline Files, unchecked Enable Offline Files.  Problem solved, shutdown now completes normally.

I still suggest you upgrade to the last servicepack and install the latest windowsupdates. Without them your system has security holes open and it is prone to have other problems too.
