Cleaning up Windows directory in XP

Are there any files that are safe to clean up from the windows directory in XP?  I have hundreds of $NTUninstall folders and well as .log files.  Over time the windows directory has grown to half of my drive space and I am trying to free some up?

At the moment, the most popular freeware utility for cleaning up unwanted files on your hard drive is probably CCleaner...

At the same time, keep in mind that quite often those "$NTUninstall" folders are directly tied into your capability to uninstall the operating system patches and hotfixes that you have previously used to update your system.

Thanks to both - the tool ccleaner worked great.  However the tips from the document also proved valuable.
