My boss has asked me to delete an email from a users inbox and make sure it cannot be recovered.  Can this be done?

delete the email from the inbox and then empty the deleted items folder
after that go into recover deleted items folder and delete the email from there as well.
this should take care of that email.

Depends on how the exchange server is setup and what backups are taking place.

You can be logged in as a client using exchange mail and delete an email from your inbox and deleted items folders, but if the exchange server is set to retain deleted items for several days then it will not be permanently deleted from the store until that period has elapsed.

There is also an option to not premanently delete items until a backup has been completed, so depending on what settings have been made on the exchange server, this will determine when emails are deleted for good. Also... if archives are made of the exchange store (probably not), then the mail could be retrieved later as well.

From the clients point of view, just make sure you delete it from your inbox/deleted items folder. Some companies do not enforce the retain deleted items for so many days since it adds to the size of the exchange store etc...

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Dave

rakeshmiglani, you say go into the recovered deleted items folder.  Is this on the exchange server?

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

Can you log onto the user mailbox using his/her credentials?

Usually when you delete an email it goes go your Deleted Item folder. It will stay in there until you clear the folder. After that the email will still be stored on the exchange server for recovery. How long it stays in the server depends on your own settings (I think the default is 14 days but it could be 28). To recover your deleted items you click on your Deleted Item folder and select Recover Deleted Items from TOOLS. If you "purge" any item in Recover Deleted Items then it will be gone for good (of course unless you can get it back from your backup).

It won't work if you open the user mailbox on your Outlook because it won't let you recover deleted items.

Yes i can log into the users mailbox.  My retention policy on my Exchange server is set for 20 days.  How do I purge that immediately from the server?
