I will be ordering a new Sql Server from Dell to replace my current setup.  I do not have the specs on me right now.  However I need to know if anyone can tell me about how many hours it took to install Windows 2003 with Sql Server 2005 and all the patches?  I have installed Sql Server 2000 on Windows 2000 and it took me a couple days, however my current network admin says he needs 80 hours.  Is 80 hours accurate?

16 hours?   80 hours?  where are these numbers coming from?

when you order the server from dell, the OS will likely already be installed.  SQL will not (ships as a disc).

as for the OS side, it took me less than 2 hours to have it configured and patched.  i am not sure about the SQL patching side of things.  the actual installation process of SQL should take less than 1 hour.  i can't imagine the patching will take more than 2 hours if you are using a high speed internet connection.  SQL configuration may take a bit more time because there are so many things that can be done...  but agian... i can't imagine it taking more than a couple of hours.

while Dell won't do the SQL install for you, they will do RAID setup, OS install, etc for no extra fee.  i suggest letting them do that side of the work, so all you have to do it boot up your new server and do OS patches, and then install SQL.

We will be re-installing the OS, there are custom installation specs that we need.  I dont think Dell has ever correctly installed the OS for us, so with OS it takes around 16 hours?

even with custom OS installation, i can't imagine the installation taking that long.  maybe i don't customize my installations as much as everyone else, but i have never had an installation take more than 1 day's work.  i guess the times could be longer if you're doing a massive number of customizations.
