I'm studying for the PMP exam doing some practice quizzes when I came across this question:

Based on an approved change, the customer increased the project scope by 65%.  This increased your cost estimate fivefole.  Now you must change the scheduled start and finished dates in your approved project schedule.  Your first step would be to...

A) Rebaseline the schedule
B) Modify the contract
C) Update the schedule baseline
D)  Add resources

I picked 'A' rebaseline the schedule.  The correct answer was 'C' with no real explanation.

I don't understand how the two are different?  And Why is 'C' the correct answer?

Can I get an opinion from a PM expert?

C is correct because..

If a project undergoes drastic changesdue to large changes to the project scope, false assumptions, or new demands from the customerit may be necessary to rebaseline the project. Rebaselining is done only in drastic changes, as it essentially resets the project. All historical information up to the rebaseline is cleared, and the project starts fresh. Schedule revision is the preferred, and most common, approach to changing the project end date.

'Revisions are a special type of project schedule change, which cause the project start date, and more likely, the project end date to be changed. They typically stem from project scope changes. Because of the additional work the new scope requires, additional time is needed to complete the project.'

So a change is scope, as decsribed in te question, would result in an updated schedule and would not warrent a re-baseline of the project schedule..

Also.. You should re-baseline only if the actual project progress has little to do with the original baseline, and in this case this is not a vaid assumption.
