Exchange glitch, lost drafts and sent spanning 4 hours.

Serverside:
SBS 2003 with Exchange running

Client Side:
XP Pro with Outlook 2003

Issue 1:
We recently had a problem where he client for some reason (still a mistery) lost connection to the Exchange Mailbox and started looking at a different source, probably a local .pst or maybe another .ost.
However the user could not receive and email but could send, the Exchange was receiving but this specific user could not view hem.

Outlook was poiting to the correct source. Everyone else in the organization could receive their emails and in the log there was nothing going wrong as far as Exchange was concerned.

Now after the user realises there should have been some incoming mail durig that period I ask her to close Outlook, log of her session and log back in again.

This did fix the problem of receiving. However all the sent emails and drafts disappeared. I have done a complete search and opened every possible .pst file I could find, also went back on the server to see if there was a temp .ost file but no luck.

There is a specific file in DRAFT she needs back to save a days work.

Happend to anyone before?

Issue 2:
Does anyone know of a tool to force the NK2 file to search the sent folder again?
This most be one of the most annoying things if you create a new user or do any kind of change
and forget to move the NK2 file.

I just want it to populate what she sent again.

Issue1:
Delete her user profile and recreate it.
Issue2:
Look in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\<user>.NK2
Check that the file exist and note the file name. Rename it to something else. Copy the old .nk2 file there and name it like the new one.

Hi Peakpeak,

Issue1:
I dont see how that will bring back anything?

Issue2:
That will not search the Address Book nor the Sent Items or am I doing it wrong?

Thanks.

#1: To restore things properly you should recreat the profile, then we continue from there.
#2: The .nk2 file contains a cache of addresses entered, there is no search involved. Each new address entered is added to the .nk2 file. I removed mine, no remembered addresses, I restored it, all were back.

To search the address book itself you type Ctrl-K

The profile is all fine and has been restored. There is a lack of 4 hours which disappeared after a log out / log in. I have checked in all the OST and PST files but there is no records of the 4 hours.

What if the file has gone corrupt? Is there no way to populate it without have to resent to everyone in you Sent list?

#1: What do you mean "lack of 4 hours"? You mean there's no mail for that time span? What if she didn't receive anything during that time? Did you try Restore Deleted Items? Default you can only do it from the Deleted Items folder so try that first. If you cannot find the messages there, read this article and enable recover on all folders (they are always on on the mail server but hidden in Outlook):
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA011165281033.aspx

#2 if you have all the addresses in any address book and it doesn't appear when typing the address, press Ctrl-K to resolve it. It'll then be added to the address cache so next time it's remembered.

Thanks I will have a go at the article.

I'm just amazed that if you loose the NK2 file for some reason there is no way to recreate it even though you have all the emails. What about the ones not in your address book... will try to right a small app scanning sent items and populating a new file... there are so many posings about that I'm amazed nothing has been done about it.

Thanks again.
