External DVD Reader/Writer recommendation

External DVD Reader/Writer recommendations for existing P4 HP desktop unit running XP SP2, eventually upgrading to Vista....

Recently purchased Adobe CS3 Premiere and Photoshop Elements, and she doesn't currently have an DVD reader/writer, only internal CD.  Thought that it would be easiest and long-term sensible to get a reliable, fast and compatible external DVD reader/writer, so looking for recommendations and links on the ideal solution.

Thanks,

I prefer slimline drives, they use less space, are easier to transport if you need to, and are just as reliable as the others. I've generally had good experiance with samsung products, but liteon is also very good. I'd just go to the nearest PC shop and look what they have, then buy what looks OK, as DVD writers aren't high cost and most products are quite all right. Below is an example:

Thx, rindi.  Appreciate your input.  It's not for me, it's for a friend elsewhere in this country, so specific end-user info on actual experience with product is key for me.

Howdy, SysExpert, long time no see.

I have an external SCSI Plextor CD Burner (reader/writer), and love it.  But haven't seen current DVD burner external types, do you have links and / or details?

I have based that on actual experience. I've been using a slimline liteon device for a couple of years now and I find it very good. I've also been using a large memorex device, and although there is no problem with it I just don't find it as practical.

Thx, rindi.  Have you used it to burn results from either of the Adobe products?  If I recall, the slimline you cited was up to 8X vs. 16X on the original link I was checking into.  Trying to help her get a current solution which will be adequate for her for a while (though no timeline with guarantees, of course).  Not at system, in transit, but wanted to check with you quickly before logging off.

Again, found the link among others for Plextor external DVD drives as noted above....  adding here before logging off to retain the flow.

Was hoping for more feedback from additional end-users on this specific issue, but do appreciate the feedback you did provide, so closing.  Including the System Requirements link for the Premiere CS3 package, which prompted this (in part).
