Child Domain DNS pointing to Parent DC's

Hi this is a query for a Windows 2003 Server environment with XP clients.

Current Structure:
Parent Domain - 2 Domain Controllers. Both Controllers serving DNS
Child Domain - 2 Domain Controllers. DNS is pointing to the Parent Domain Controllers for both primary and secondary
Clients - DNS is pointing to the parent Domain Controllers for both primary and secondary

Would this cause an issue or should DNS be setup on the child domain DC's and replicated to the Parent Domain with all clients pointing to the child domain DC's? If the current set up is an issue could you explain why?

as long as your child domain controllers can register SRV records in DNS, it doesn't matter where DNS runs. but I prefer to delegate a childdomain zone out of parent zone.

Now I am assuming that the Child domain controllers can register SRV records as the entries are in DNS. But as we have stopped the DNS Server Service on both of the Child Domain Controllers, would it cause a problem or is there a way to check SRV?

    Accepted Solution

run a netdiag /v and dcdiag /v on your domain controllers, if you have dns registration issue, you will see a lot error/failure tests. Otherwise you have nothing to worry about.
