Are you referring to svchost.exe?

If yes, then you might want to look at this kb article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

svchost.exe handles much of the 'behind the scenes' activity in various versions of Windows and often shows up in several instances in the 'processes' tab of Task Manager or the 'Processes' column of sysinternals' Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx)
