Java method/program to search database, converting proper name to nicknames

I need a Java method/program that can take a proper name (i.e. Robert) and search a data base matching not only that name but any possible nick name combinations: Bob, Rob, Bobby, Robby, Rob, etc. Must be able to be used with SQL 2000.

    You need to do a join to another detail table containing nicknames. Name and Nickname tables would be in a one-to-many relation
