Oracle SQLPlus fails on Vista

I installed Oracle 10g Standard Edition on a new laptop with Windows Vista Premium. The Oracle DB instance and the TNSListener are started as Service automatically when Windows starts. The iSQLPlus also runs from the Browser window with no problem. But when I try SQLPlus, specifying SYSTEM/password and host string, I get an error that says ORA-12569 TNS:packet checksum failure. The oracle instance is at port 1158 (part of the host string). The sqlnet and tnsnames configuration has a different port number - 1522 - probably used by SQL Plus. The Oracle documentation only says to set the Trace Level and run it again which I did with the same results? I am not able figure out what set up needs to be changed or if it is a Vista problem.
Thanx in advance for any help.

I have installed Standard Edition for Vista. I have downloaded the documentation also, not much help.
I am now using port 1521, and I get ORA 12514 TNS:Listener does not know of service requested in connect descriptor. The service is named as 'orcl'. The tnsnames.ora has an entry looks like this:
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = = 1521))
The Service that is started by Windows has a name of OracleServiceORCL. I did ping to the ip-address and tnsping to the service orcl. Both returned OK.

I figured out what the problem is. The problem is with the Host string I specified on SQL Plus. I was specifying only. It worked fine when I included db instance also -
Still this is a strange error: ORA-12569 TNS:packet checksum failure.
