Hi , I am applying a login script to a users OU  through GPO in windows 2003 AD , while linking the vbs file it asks for a Script Name and Script Parameters . May I know what is script parameter.

With parent setting disabled it will not disable the settings for that configuration all the way down, even with "enforce" set.  As this only disbles those settings for that gpo explictly.  Did you run the Modeling wizard on a user that can not get the script?  That will tell you If the script is even being applied to them.  Best first step in finding the trouble.

it is mainly saying when to launch login scipt . as far i know you dont need to enter anythng there. just to check with you are you uing the GPO and then adding the file in SCript and then Logon .

Hope this helps

yes i did and copied the file at  domainnameSysVoldomainnamePolicies{142B4268-9... . and i am able to see the file when i want to link.it is at the stage it asks for a script file name and once we choose the file this input box is filled but there is another box which asks for script parameters .. however even if you leave this blank it gets added , but users are not able to get this gpo added and cant this when they log off and login back and run gpresult.

then it is something else needed to be checked. but just to check with you may be you can go to any one of the use can see if you can double click the file and see if thr scipts works for them,
\\someting.local\SysVol\something.local\scripts\printer.vbs
if you see carefully i have placed the in the scipts folder so user can access the script. but just for your understanding i have even tried just giveing a name for the scipt parameter like printer mapping . if you want you can also give some name and see if you feel that might be the probs.

Cheers:)

Script parameters are values that need to be added to the command line for the script to function.  They are simular to command line options(switches in dos) but these are used to change a variable in the script making it flexiable and dynamic in its operation.

Example

I can create a script to count all the files in a folder by extension.  and reqiure at execute time the user enter two parameters, the folder name and the extension name.

so my command line would look like this

countextension.vbs folder1,txt

In the script the parameter folder1 would set the value for a variable of what folder to scan, and txt would set the value for what to search for.

If this dosent make sense let me know.

What is your script suppose to do?

IE as in Kamal example using a printer.vbs the script may require script parameters of the server and printer name.  So that a user can execute the script for Any printer on Any server my passing the paramters at the command line rather then rewriting the script for each printer on each server.

printer.vbs Server-dc1,laser10

basically this is a vb script which maps printers and shares..when double clicked it works.but when added thru gpo it dosent.and the gpresult dosent show this when run.tried rebooting the user machine.hope this helps in finding the cause.

Well assuming you know what the script is and what its suppose to do in that you dont need to add any paramters to it.(I ran when dbl clicked and worked correctly)  Could this be either a permission issue(the user that the script is executing with applying the GPO dosnt have permission to the resources, but dbl clicking as an admin you do) Second thing to look for, be sure a GPO higher up or lower down dosnt have another script being applied as well.  IE also a no override/enforced gpo.

In the group policy manager run the group policy Modeling wizard(bottom left) and select one of your user that the script is not running for, ensure that the resultant set of policies includes this script.

This will verify that the gpo is applying without being overiden.

if your not using the gpo manager you can get it here

parent OU  has a GPO with only computer configuration enabled and user configuration is disabled .
in this scnerio when a new gpo is applied to user configuration (like login script etc) on a child OU which is under that above mentioned parent OU will that work ? or do we need to enable the user configuration at the parent level OU's GPO..
