SQL database backend with Sharepoint Front-end...how?

Hi,

One of my co-workers and I are working together to implement a new help desk issue tracking front-end using Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 (WSS).  What's the best way to accomplish this?  We have all Office 2007 applications so we've been playing around with InfoPath and Access.  We also have Sharepoiint Designer 2007 as well, but don't know much about it?  Is one of those our best option, or is there something else out there?

Our Back-end SQL 2000 database has all of our asset information, users, departements, etc in tables already, so we would just need help on the front-end.  Ideally, it would be nice to design something, then publish it right to our sharepoint site somehow, but we're open to anything.

Thanks.

Thanks, I'll take a look at those tutorials.  I have worked with the Sharepoint apps and templates you posted about.  Do you know of a way we can grab one of those applications and modify it to fit our needs?  I do like the appearance of the Help Desk application that was provided, but it lacked e-mail functionality when assigning the Issue Ticket to someone.  Otherwise it might have been perfect.  The call center app didn't work for us either.

You can modify the templates using SarePoint Designer.

Also this 3rd party app may help you with the email side of things if it on an alert type basis:

We're still struggling with SharePoint Designer a little bit, but I think we'll figure it out.  Thanks for the help.
