rpc over https front end back end

I have 2 2003 R2 servers running exchange 2003 SP2, server 1 is a dc and gc and the exchange back end, server 2 is a member server and the exchange front end.
I am trying to get rpc over HTTPS running and cannot get outlook to connect using HTTPS, it is using TCP/IP.
I have done this before on a single server situation but not a front end back end before.
I have a bought cert and am getting the correct response when connecting to http://server2/rpc.
I am getting myself confused with which servers to do which registry changes on.
Can anyone out there give me the benifit of their experience.

You don't make any registry changes on a frontend/backend scenario.
If you have attempted to make registry changes then in ESM set both servers to not part of the RPC over HTTPS topology which will clear the settings. Then simply set the GUI as required.
