How do I configure a network printer connected directly to a PC via Ethernet?

The computer is running Windows XP Pro.  The computer has two NIC cards.  One NIC card is configured for the Internet.  The second NIC card is connected to the printer and has the following configuration:

     IP:  192.168.11.12
     Subnet:  255.255.255.0
     Gateway:
     DNS:

The printer is an HP DesignJet 650c Plotter.  It has the following configuration:

     IP: 192.168.11.12
     Subject: 255.255.255.0
     Gateway:

When I try to add the printer, as a local printer with a standard TCP/IP port, it does not recognize the printer.

What am I doing wrong?  Many thanks in advance.

You need to assign the printer a unique IP (e.g. 192.168.11.13).  The duplication is making it impossible for the port to be recognized.  Do the same steps once you get the IP fixed and it should work then.  Let me know if you have a problem or a question.

After you fix the IP address, there is another possible problem. You say the printer is directly connected to the PC. In that case, make sure you use a "cross-over" cable, rather than a standard network cable, or the PC won't see the printer at all. You can buy cross-over cables at any shop that sell standard cables.

I'm glad I could help.  Did you still have a question or need some help with this?  I noticed the B grade and that really doesn't make sense since you never posted a reply.  Let us know if you have a question on this or need more details.  I'll be happy to provide what I can and I can definitely help more.  It is nice to have a chance to earn the A.

Thanks for the fun question.
