Unable to autoinstall ANY drivers on XP Pro

I just purchased a new ThinkPad T60p running Windows XP Pro. I'm having an odd problem with installing drivers.

When I plug in any device (even a thumb drive!) I get the add new hardware wizard. If I select to install the drivers automatically, it fails and says it can't find any drivers. If I manually point to the c:\windows\inf directory, it will install the drivers just fine.

I confirmed Plug-n-play service is indeed running, but I can't figure out what the issue is. Any ideas on how to rectify this so that drivers that are already on the system install automatically?

Windows searches a predefined path on the drive, looking in .inf files to find the best match for the Plug and Play ID of the device.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath: REG_EXPAND_SZ:%SystemRoot%\Inf

Modify this entry to point to the inf folder.

Perfect, thanks! For some reason that entire entry was missing.
