I am running SBS 2003 Standard Edition R2 on HP ML 110 G4. Everything is working properly on the network, but when I check my DHCP on server, at times it says running and at times it says not running. I am confused by this. Is this normal?

If you click around on it and expand some of the options, does it magically come back to life? If so then I think it is just the MMC snap-in being slow to refresh.

Squinn,

Yes, it does. I am a little afraid to do too much clicking because my server keeps crashing and I get parity errors. HP is sending me a free : ) 1 GB of RAM. But, that's a problem for another day. Is there anyway to speed up the MMC?

Not that I know of. Maybe when your other errors clear up and you have better RAM it won't be an issue. Mine just cleard up on it's own after a while.

Yeah, I think I got back advice on how much RAM I should have for SBS 2003. Hell, I have more RAM on my home computer and my work computer.

And, waiting for awhile is sometimes better than all of the troubleshooting. <G>

Ironically, I was helping a friend install SBS 2003 Standard R2 tonight. His server managment console was severely lacking. Wasn't even a To Do list on it. I think the problem was he didn't have an MMC 3.0. So we had to download it from the Internet -- actually SP2. I could have sworn by 2003 SBS disk came with MMC on it.

The standard SBS installation does come with MMC but not MMC3.0. If his ToDo list, and other things did not show up, he did something wrong during the installation. He probably saw a warning or error and just blew right through it. Whatever it was, it will come back to bite him somewhere along the line.

Just for reference, I don't set up any SBS servers with less the 4GB of RAM. Ram is cheap compared to my billing rate for fixing RAM related performance issues.

Thanks.

It's weird, because I am usually "bigger is better" type of person. I have 2GBs in home and office PC with only one on server. That was the advice I got. I  have no idea why I didn't at least go with two.

So, I have four slots with two 512s. I guess I could add 2 GBs for a total of 3, so I don't throw away the two 512s. Of course, HP will probably send 2 more sticks of 512, so that would give me 2GBs. Probably best off just purchasing 4GBs. But, then I would have nowhere to use the 2GB total of 512s since they most likely wouldn't work on other motherboards. Oh well. I guess an entirerly different question.

I'm sure you'll work somethign out. According to the spec sheet on the HP web site, you server uses standard ddr2-667-pc5300-ecc memory.

Thanks Squinn,

Maybe best option is 2 x 2GBs plus the 512. But, I read somewhere that the OS can only see 4GBs unless it is 64 bit.

Thanks for all your help.

SBS is not a 64 bit OS. But you are right, it will only use 4GB.
