I just wanted my computer to automatically start a program when it boots  I prefer to have this show up through MS config instead of a scheduled task.  Could you please let me know how to do this?

    Accepted Solution

Right click the program file and select Create Shortcut from the context menu that scrolls out.  Then drag the shortcut to the Startup folder on your Start Menu (just hold it over the Start button until the Start Menu opens up, then over "All Programs" in that menu until it opens up, then hold it and release it while in the Startup folder.)

That will make it show in MSconfig, but it will only run when someone logs in, not at boot time. If you want it to run at boot then add as a scheduled task.

If you want both "at boot time" and "in Msconfig" then consider writing your program as a Service.

             Hi jjrr007
If you want it to run at startup of machine and show up in Ms config, do the following
                        *Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Currentversion>Run
*In right-pane right-click empty space New>String Value. Name it as you want then double-click it and specify the full path of the application like c:\program files\test\test.exe
                        *Restart your computer.

Thanks for your assistance.  It worked using both regedit and and dragging into the Start-Up selection.
