iPod 15GB. Firewire/USB trouble

have a 15GB 1st gen ipod. it came with a firewire attachment. BUT....i can only sync it using a usb attachment. BUT...the battery doesnt last long enough to sync the thing, and crashes pretty easily. When i go to restore the whole thing using iTunes, it says it can only format using the firewire....which when hooked up to, doesnt recognize the ipod via itunes.

any suggestions. thinking along the lines of needing to install the older software.

Been a 1st generation the battery could be on the last part of it's life so;
First option, change battery
Second option use a powered USB hub to power the IPod during the restore process
Other possibility is on ITunes, with the IPod connected with the USB, disable the option "Use the IPod as hard disk" or something like that, then disconnect the IPod, close ITunes, connect the IPod with the firewire and try again.
Also a question what kind of Firewire does yoour computer has, big connector six pins or small conector 4 pins, with small conector you don't have power capabilities.

Can you at least charge the iPod battery using the supplied AC charger?
