I want to move the physical datafiles associated with the distribution database installed on SQL 2000 when you set up replication.

How can I move these files, I assume it is not a case of detaching and reattaching the DB as this will cause replication to fail

You can do detach/attach move.  Just stop all replications before and check if no job will start it again (stop Agent). There is no other component holding connection to distribution except replication agents running.

    Accepted Solution

In Replication Monitor you can find replication agents. There are diferent agent types depending on type of replication. Log Reader agent is dependent on distribution database, other agents will just fail if distribution will not be awailable. Stoping all agents is recomended.
If replication agents are scheduled for regular starts it is driven by SQL Server Agent service. Go to SQL Server Agent, Jobs and find apropriete jobs and disable it. Instead of disabling you can stop whole SQL Agent if not used for other work.
After move remember to start everything as before.
